GC Eastern Region Handicap League 30th June 2023

We managed to squeeze a win over Chelmsford Greens’ Croquet Team on Friday in the East Anglian Golf Croquet Handicap play League, Eastern Area, with a narrow margin of 10 to 8 games. Chelmsford offered a strengthen Team to include John Skuse and Dave Dawsey following the previous Match when we beat Chelmsford Blue Team 17 to 1 games back in early June.

We got off to a poor start by losing both doubles games on a couple of sloping courts that defied more accurate scoring. However, the tricky playing conditions spurred us to finish before lunch at 6 games all before clinching the Match by 3.30pm.

Top scorer for Colchester was Kev Croot who despite reducing his handicap score to a 7 managed to win all his remaining four games. Other Team members were Ed Hogbin & Patrick de Burca who scored three games apiece and Team Captain Stephen Scrase who came in at a dismal two wins for the day. Scrase exclaimed ‘my game as lowest Team handicap score suffered under the new rules of Advantage play, I know I have to live with the new rules but overall my game this year has been very disappointing and I intend to rule myself out of playing in the final matches against the two Maldon Teams, as I have a choice of some excellent Colchester Club Members’.

Colchester City remain at the top of the league with six points and +106 hoops to their credit.

Round 4 to be played against Maldon Lakeside, 21st July, away.
