We held the CCC Community BBQ and Open Day on Sunday 13th August. Funded by Colchester City Council, the session offered an opportunity for local people to meet and try out a new activity in a lovely tranquil setting.
For once this summer, the weather was perfect – dry(!) and not too hot – and around 60 members and guests ages ranging from 2 to 92 enjoyed a lively afternoon on the four lawns. At one stage all four lawns were double banked playing both primary and secondary colours with everyone having a try. Members were on hand to offer coaching and guests commented on how simple the rules are, and how interesting the strategy is. Many people were surprised to find that croquet isn’t just about hitting balls through hoops, and the realisation that you could hit your opponent’s ball away from a favourable position was met with universal approval!
The youngest players were Liz’s grandsons – Joe and Elliott, who got their mallets swinging nicely and played some excellent shots. It would be nice to see them again soon and if anyone else has grandchildren perhaps they’d like to come along too? It’s definitely a good age to start playing!
Several visitors expressed an interest in joining and took away membership forms resulting in twelve new members to date.
All in all, a very enjoyable afternoon, and a huge thanks to the many members who helped out – shopping, baking, cooking, welcoming guests, manning the bar, helping in the kitchen, coaching on the lawns.
