This year the Ken Wheeler Shield, an annual tournament run by the East Anglian Croquet Federation, was held at Colchester. It is a competition between teams of 3 from six counties: Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Essex. Thankfully the weather had cooled down after the recent scorching heat, so we were all reaching for jumpers rather than trying to find a patch of shade to shelter from the sun!
After 6 closely contested rounds, Bedfordshire emerged as the winners of the trophy but Essex didn’t come away empty handed – they won the wooden spoon…
Many thanks to everyone who helped with all the jobs needed to ensure the smooth running of the day: setting the hoops, refreshing the white lines, marking the centre points and, last but not least, providing the tea time cakes!
All the visitors said they enjoyed the day (and the cakes). In fact, it was such a success that they’d like the competition to return to Colchester next year when hopefully Essex will make better use of their home advantage.
