Taking Part

If you’re thinking about trying Croquet, the Colchester Croquet Club is the perfect place to get started! We offer an enjoyable way to stay active outdoors, challenge yourself with a tactical game, and meet new people. To get involved, simply come along to one of our scheduled sessions (details below) wearing flat-soled shoes. If those times don’t suit you, feel free to contact our secretary at secretary.colchestercroquet@gmail.com to arrange a personalised introduction. We’ll be happy to give you a taster session and explain the many benefits of the game and joining our club!

As a member you are welcome to play on most days from dawn to dusk. However, please note that courts may be unavailable during Croquet Association tournaments, club matches, or internal competitions.

You are welcome to bring a guest to play with you. The lawn fee is £10 per guest for a full day or £5 for a half day. Guests are allowed up to three visits before being encouraged to consider membership.

Scheduled Sessions: During the summer season

  • Monday afternoons: All four courts reserved for a Golf Croquet (GC) roll-up.
  • All day Thursdays: Courts one and three are reserved for the whole day for a GC roll-up.

These are called roll-ups because as a member you can just come along (roll up) and join in; no need to book. They’re great for meeting people and provide a fantastic opportunity to learn from more seasoned players.

  • Sunday afternoons: You’re welcome to bring guests to play for free. Guests are allowed up to three visits before being encouraged to consider membership.

During the winter season we currently only have two courts available. Both of them are booked out for GC roll-up Monday and Thursday Afternoons.

If you are an Association Croquet (AC) Player please consider indoor croquet at Aldham Village Hall every Thursday throughout the winter.

Booking Lawns: For play on other days, courts should be reserved in advance through our online booking system. You can access the booking system either from home or via the terminal in the clubhouse. From April to September, all four courts are available for booking, while from October to March, only two courts are open. Please note that courts may be unavailable during Croquet Association tournaments, club matches, or internal competitions. To ensure availability, check the website or court booking system for scheduled events.

Club Events and Socials: Once a month, we hold a member’s lunch followed by a friendly game of croquet. The menu and sign-up sheet will be posted on the noticeboard under the clock in the clubhouse.

Coaching and Equipment: Coaching is available for both Association Croquet (AC) and Golf Croquet (GC). Invariably coaching is arranged via the WhatsApp group, email and the website. Mallets are available to borrow from the line beneath the noticeboard, but must remain on club grounds. When the time comes to purchase your own mallet, seek advice from experienced members to find what suits you best. The website has links to local suppliers.

Tournaments: Explore our club’s website for detailed descriptions of our internal competitions, helping you decide which ones you might want to enter. We also field teams for local leagues (EACF) and competitions, catering to both serious and casual players. Additionally, we host national tournaments right here at the club. As a member, you’ll automatically be affiliated with Croquet England, giving you access to a wide range of tournaments across the country, should you wish to take part.
